Benue North-East

The Benue North-East Senatorial District has suffered devastating attacks from the armed herdsmen, with each Local Government Area (LGA) experiencing varying degrees of violence. Below is a breakdown of attacks, tactics, and humanitarian impact per LGA.

Katsina-Ala LGA: Centre of Bandit-Herder Collusion

Notable Attacks:  

  • May 2021: Over 50 killed in Tse-Zua, Tse-Agberagba, and Torov.  
  • July 2022: Armed Herdsmen ambushed farmers in Mbayion, killing 23.  
  • March 2023: Massacre in Mbatyula, where women and children were targeted.  
  • Feb–Mar 2025: Fresh attacks in Dikpo, Imande Gberihwa, Kpav axis killed 11, injured 7; homes and barns burned.
  • Mar 2025: Another raid killed 15 people over Utange, Dikpo, Imande Gberihwa; many missing, mass flight into forests.
  • Nov 2024 – Mar 2025: At least 20 killed in Imande Gberihwa and Dikpo; 20 bodies recovered from bush.

Tactics Used:  

  • Forest Ambushes: Armed Herdsmen hide in Katsina-Ala River and forests before striking.  
  • Market Attacks: Disrupt trade by attacking Zaki-Biam market (though mainly in Ukum, spillover effects occur).  
  • Collaboration with Bandits: Some attacks linked to Gana’s militia remnants (former warlord).  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Mass displacement to Anyiin IDP camp.  
  • Farmers abandoning crops, leading to food shortages.  
  • Ongoing Impact: Schools, markets, and clinics shut—20 schools, 23 markets closed for over a year in Katsina-Ala LGA due to armed herdsmen presence.

Logo LGA: Systematic Displacement

Notable Attacks:  

  • New Year’s Day 2018 Massacre: 73 killed in Tombo, Tse-Orlough, and Ayilamo.  
  • June 2020: Fulani Armed Herdsmen razed 12 villages, displacing over 10,000.  
  • 2023 Attacks: Ongoing raids in Ugbaam, Mbagber, and Ukemberagya.
  • Apr 2025: coordinated attacks killed a combined 72 bodies recovered from Ukum and Logo areas.
  • May 9–10, 2025: Coordinated herdsmen/Jukun raids—9 killed, widespread property damage—part of state-wide attacks on 4 LGAs.
  • By mid-May 2025: Over 72 fatalities reported within weeks, with Logo among the hardest hit.

Tactics Used:  

  • Night Raids: Villages attacked between 1 AM – 4 AM when residents are vulnerable.  
  • Use of Motorcycles: Herdsmen speed in on bikes, shoot, and escape.  
  • Burning of Farms: Deliberate destruction of yam and cassava barns.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Logo has one of the highest IDP populations in Benue.  
  • Children unable to attend school due to attacks on rural schools.  

Ukum LGA: The Killing Fields

Notable Attacks:  

  • 2021 Zaki-Biam Market Massacre: Over 30 traders killed.  
  • 2023 Torov Attack: Entire village displaced, 15 killed.  
  • 2024 Raids: Frequent kidnappings along Katsina-Ala-Ukum Road.
  • 2025 Gbagir Good Friday massacre where over 80 were killed  
  • Apr 2025: Governor recovers 72 bodies; 12 in Ukum alone from overnight attacks.
  • May 9–10, 2025: Coordinated raids, 8 killed, homes burned, and mass displacement.
    • Attacks are “near-daily,” with targeted raids around Turan and border communities.

Tactics Used:  

  • Road Blockades: Armed Herdsmen block escape routes before attacking.  
  • Cattle Rustling: Stealing Tiv-owned livestock to fund operations.  
  • Infiltration by Bandits: Some attacks linked to terror groups from Zamfara.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Economic collapse due to market disruptions.  
  • Rise in vigilante groups (e.g., Ukum Youth Volunteers).  

Konshisha LGA: Fields of Despair

Notable Attacks:  

  • April 2021 Military-Clash: Fulani Armed Herdsmen vs. Konshisha youths led to over 100 deaths.  
  • 2023 Mchia Massacre: 46 killed in a single night raid.

Tactics Used:  

  • False Flag Attacks: Some assaults blamed on Armed Herdsmen disguised as soldiers.  
  • Forest Hideouts: Konshisha hills used as militia bases.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Many villages completely deserted.  
  • Farmers now use armed escorts to access fields.  

Vandeikya LGA: Valleys of Death

Notable Attacks:  

  • 2019 Mbatyough Attack: 17 killed in a surprise raid.  
  • 2022 Mbakyaan Massacre: Women and children targeted.  

Tactics Used:  

  • Silent Night Raids: Few survivors to report attacks.  
  • Use of Informants: Some locals accused of tipping off herdsmen.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Low media coverage despite high casualties.  
  • Churches burnt, worsening religious tensions.  

Kwande LGA: Cross-border infiltration

Notable Attacks:  

  • 2023 Moon Attack: 30 killed, including a traditional ruler.  
  • 2024 Mbadura Ambush: Farmers slaughtered while returning from fields.  

Tactics Used:  

  • Cross-Border Raids: Armed Herdsmen enter from Cameroon.  
  • Use of Heavy Weapons: Mortars reported in some attacks.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Refugees fleeing to Cameroon.  
  • Schools and hospitals destroyed.  

Ushongo LGA: The Ravaged Earth

Notable Attacks:  

  • 2022 Jato-Aka Attack: 20 killed in a market raid.  
  • 2023 Raids: Villages near Lessel repeatedly attacked.  

Tactics Used:  

  • Hit-and-Run Attacks: Armed Herdsmen strike, then retreat into Ushongo forests.  
  • Kidnapping for Ransom: Rising cases of abductions.  

Humanitarian Impact:  

  • Many farmers now carry Dane guns for self-defense.  
  • Increased child malnutrition due to food shortages.  

The Fulani Armed Herdsmen operates with near impunity across Benue North-East, exploiting weak security, forests, and cross-border movement. Without decisive military action, community reconciliation, and alternative grazing solutions, the crisis will worsen.
